On September 29, 2009, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.3 struck in the South Pacific between Samoa and American Samoa. The earthquake caused four tsunami waves up to 4 to 6 meters high (13 to 19 feet) which traveled up to 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) inland.

According to the United Nations, at least 150 people were killed and hundreds are missing in Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga islands. The highest death toll was in Samoa (formerly Western Samoa). There are two main islands in Samoa, Upolu and Savai’i. On both islands, on the south and west coasts, the wave caused extensive property damage and displaced thousands of families.

MicroAid is raising $50,000 to help rebuild houses and replace lost tools in Samoa.
